The Himalayan nation's Political Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This commitment follows the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with several major political figures. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
